Welcome to our "Be The Change" Blog

The 2010 - 2011 Be The Change Student Committee planned, organized and hosted a variety of initiatives within the school community to build awareness at all levels of society. Students dedicated countless hours outside of the instructional day to ensure that all events were successful in engagement and participation. With their leadership, the school community in three years raised enough money to build a water sanitization unit in Sri Lanka for children to attend school instead of fetching water. Not only were funds raised for the Adopt-A-Village campaign but the student committee also promoted character development through initiatives such as: Caught in the Act and the New Years' Resolution. Building awareness in our local community students organized a food drive to support Second Harvest.

A list of initiatives for 2009 - 2010:
Food Drive
Character Development
New Years Resolution
Vow of Silence
Poetry Night
Jump Rope for Heart
Caught in the Act
Get Loud

  2. I really agree with you Solah. We'd better get the skit perfected in time though, it's a little rough now.

  5. This is the letter that we were working on this meeting. We changed many pharagraphs that are now really great but we still need to fix one of them. help:) HALLOWEEN 4 HUNGER

The Be the Change Student Leadership Committee (BTC) at McMurrich will be participating this year in an event called Halloween for Hunger. We are a group of committed Grade 6 students who believe that we can make a difference in the world and in our local community. This event will give young children, like us a chance to help stop hunger and feed Families in the Toronto Area. Halloween for Hunger is an initiative that was created by Free the Children. Students across the GTA will also be participating in this event in the hopes of stopping hunger in Toronto.

On Halloween Night, The Be the Change Leadership Committee will be Trick or Treating for non perishable food items for families in the Toronto Area. We will be requesting that families within our community donate 1 or more non perishable food items to The Be the Change Leadership Committee on Halloween Night. We will be donating all collected food items to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

On the night of Halloween The Be the Change Leadership Committee will identify themselves with a sign indicating who we are so you know who to donate the non perishable food items too.

The BTC Leadership Committee decided to participate in Halloween for Hunger this year because we wanted to make a difference for other children that don’t have as much food as we do, so we want to help stop hunger and spread the message that hunger exist even in Toronto and is a huge issue.

The donation that we would hope you will make, will support local food banks and people in our community who are hungry. Poverty and hunger are challenges that effect many people in North America especially children around the ages of 5-13.

According to Free the Children, 841 640 people and families in Toronto use the local food bank daily. Last year in March, almost 800,000 Canadians turned to their local food bank for a meal. We at McMurrich believe that every one should have a chance to not worry about their food and where their next meal will come from. We are hoping that you will help us and our community to make a difference.

Last year, 408 schools participated in Halloween for Hunger and donated around 217 713 pounds of canned food each. That was an outstanding number of cans! That fed about
2 221 families! This year, our school hopes that we will raise enough cans to make hunger in Toronto disappear!

Thank you for reading and we hope you participate with us in Halloween for Hunger and we look forward to seeing you on Halloween!

    ReplyDelete
  12. To: Niya
Well we are going to ask all the students in McMurrich to stay silent for the whole day and for the kindergartans, half a day, but then, you can't text message, email, facbook or pass notes. CLARA:)

  13. I think that we are getting a bit of information for the Vow of Silence but i dont think we has much as we could have because a few students in the leader ship group are not using their time wisly, so we might not be ready for the date that we have planed to do the initiative. But if everyone uses their time that is given wisly we could finnish even earlier and the Vow of Silence can be an on time succses.
