  1. The alternative income program is where we donate money to buy certain needs for people around the world.

The Free the children website says that:

$50 can help purchase animals for milking/breeding
$100 can help purchase basic business supplies and resources
$250 can help purchase sewing machines and tailoring equipment
$500 can help support small grants or micro-credit loans for families
$1,000 can help support basic literacy, numeracy and business training workshops

According to the free the children website.

  2. Free The Children alternative income projects are focused on helping parents find sustainable sources of income to provide for their families, thus freeing their children to go to school. To date, we’ve benefited more than 23,500 women.

Around the world, many young children cannot go to school because they are forced to work to help support their families. In areas of low employment, poverty is the normal state of affairs, and parents do not have the skills or the money to provide properly for their children. Children have no choice but to help the family; the alternative is starvation.

Recognizing that parents want to provide for their children, Free The Children implements alternative income projects that give those disadvantaged families a sustainable source of income. We supply them with productive and sustainable resources that they otherwise would not be able to purchase or organize:

• Agricultural implements
• Animals and small machinery
• Women’s cooperatives

When parents can meet their basic income needs and sell milk, sew clothes, or sell farm produce in the community, they are able to remove their children from dangerous working conditions and send them to school.

  3. Nearly half the world’s population (2.8 billion people) lives on less than $2 per day, making it very difficult for those families to be able to afford to send their children to school. In many areas, women’s’ skills and potential continue to be ignored and kids often have to subsidize the family income by working themselves.

Your participation in the alternative income campaign empowers mothers living in poverty to support their families. This kind of support helps break the cycle of poverty because women who earn a good living can send their children to school instead of work.

The exact alternative income project you support depends on the country you choose to fundraise for. Free The Children bases our alternative income projects on each community’s specific values and needs. For example, in China, we mostly supply pigs and farming equipment, but in Sri Lanka, we run a micro-credit and business training program.

When you sign up for the alternative income campaign, we send you a wall-size campaign poster and a step-by-step guide. You also receive one-on-one support from your youth programming coordinator.

  5. How does the alternative income help
In India, Free The Children provided 500 women with milking animals and 153 women with sewing machines or gem polishing machines, donated by people like you. These resources significantly improved the standard of living of marginalized women.
